Patricia, I agree that Mr. Paine deserves a standing ovation for his writing. It was extremely brave of him to express his feelings about religion during this time period. Like you, I am also thankful that we live in a time and a country where we are free to practice (or not practice) the religion of our choosing. However, I do have to disagree with you when you say that we can express religion without scrutiny; this really stuck out to me. I think that while we are free to practice religion, that does not mean that it comes without harsh judgment. There is currently a significant issue in the U.S. in regards to Islamophobia, and that is what comes to mind for me when discussing scrutiny in regards to religion.
