In this day and age, it’s incredible to see how innovative technology and scientific discoveries have changed the world we live in. From the discovery of evidence for the evolution of species in the fossil record, to the role of microorganisms in causing infectious diseases, scientists have come closer and closer to understanding how life works and its interconnectivities. It is especially interesting is to look at how far science has come to understanding DNA, as well as how technology has evolved in such a way to allow scientists to manipulate and edit genomes and sequences. In this paper, I will be addressing human reproductive engineering via CRISPR-Cas9, as well as it’s link to designer babies. I will be examining the repercussions of …show more content…
The CRISPR protein contains the Cas9 enzyme that uses a guide sequence within RNA to form base pairs with DNA target sequences. This allows the enzyme to break the DNA at a specific region in the strand (Doudna & Charpentier, 2014). In other words, the Cas9 acts as a pair of scissors in order to cut the DNA at a specific location so that parts of DNA can then be changed by adding in or deleting fragments of the genome. Because CRISPR-Cas9 programming is simple and has the capacity to recognize targets at multiple areas, this has granted for many exceptional developments to be made concerning the editing, modification, regulation, and marking of genomic loci precisely and …show more content…
With this biotechnical advancement, scientist could have the ability to create new biofuels, medicines, and foods, and potentially change the occurrence of diseases due to defects in DNA sequencing. Along with that, by allowing for the modification of DNA, researchers would be able to analyze DNA sequences and the function of specific genes. With more testing and the creation of more precise technology, designer babies may be more of a possibility than one might think. With targeted mechanisms like CRISPR, defects due to genetic errors can be overridden, and maybe even eradicated, leading to healthier and genetically stronger
