When I imagined myself as a doctor, I saw a person that offered guidance rather than dictated. My patient’s values would be more important than mine. I wanted to know my patients personally and not as a number on a list I had to complete. I didn’t want to be the kind of doctor that saw someone for two minutes, scribbled on a prescription pad, and left. This paternalistic style of practice, where the patient has no authority, might have worked at a time when medical care was scarce, but in the US where a majority of people have access to medical care, the quality of the care is valued just as much as the treatment. Similar fears popped up back in 1964 when President Johnson tried to pass the Medicare Bill. A doctor even sent Johnson a prescription note saying, “Please, no medicare under social security! It would make things worse than they are now, not better.” Perhaps he feared taxes on private practicing doctors would increase or being overworked or even put out of business. As we have witnessed today, the Medicare bill was a success and provided insurance to millions of elderly Americans without breaking their children’s banks accounts. In medical school, you are given all the technical knowledge you might need to help patients but it is usually not enough. You are taught to deal with bodies and not a person. To be a better doctor, it is essential to continually learn and adapt. In the University Lecture on leadership, Dr. Reddick gave the advice to go out and seek information, and that there’s only so much you can learn in class. Connecting back to availability error, you can’t rely on something that worked well in the past to work in the future. The Affordable Care Act does not dictate doctors explicitly, but the act makes having an interpersonal relationship with patients more difficult. That does not mean expanding healthcare is bad, but the current situation to which it is applied is not ideal. The act will increase the number of patients I’ll have to see—resulting in care not up to my potential or preference. Increased patients also increases chances for mistakes.
