I’ve watched this film twice now. The first time was last year, and originally my thoughts on the movie were, “wow that was an amazing, but extremely sad movie”. However, watching it the second time, very recently, I was given a much different perspective. I was struck with numerous moral questions while simultaneously bawling my eyes out. The main moral question within this movie concerns whether duplicating a child for the purpose of saving another is permissible. The film documents the life of a girl, Kate, who at a young age was diagnosed with Leukemia. Her parents resorted to duplicating Kate’s chromosomes through the conception of another child, Anna. Her parents with the intent of being a match to donate bone marrow to her sister created Anna. The film goes on to portray the countless surgeries and procedures Anne has undergone in attempt to prolong Kate’s life. As Anna gets older, she becomes aware of her conception, and her parents intentions with her creation. It has come to the point where Kate is in dire need of a kidney, and Sara is demanding Anna give up hers. Therefore, Anna …show more content…
After deliberating and questioning my own values, I came to the conclusion stating Anna’s actions, in my opinion, ultimately maximized the most happiness for all those around her. Moreover, utilitarianism depicts that the best moral actions is one in which maximizes the most utility, in other words happiness or pleasure. By allowing Kate’s desire to die to come true, Anna brought utility to her, and brought her familyback together, increasing their utility as well.
