And We will
surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of
wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient
(Quran,2:155)
From the verse, we understand that the trial of Allah can be
in various forms. Mental disorder is one of the trials of Allah to
humankind. In
Muslimcommunity
however, there are many Stigmas about mental illness. One of the
stigmas is, as the mental illness is a form of test or punishment
from Allah, one should just accept it as it were, and the least
they could do is just make a dua to Allah and be patient or in
other word, just bear with it. This is contradicted to Islamic
teaching where Allah clearly said in the holy book:
So, verily, with every difficulty, there is relief: Verily,

While it is
true that devils are the arc-enemy of human and the roots of all
evils and negative things, the causes of mental disease is not
limited to that reasons only. In fact, many pious Muslim scholars,
including Ibn Sina, the founder of modern medicine, rejected such
concept and viewed mental disorders as conditions that were
physiologically based. Ar Razi also viewed that mental disorder
such as depression, anxiety or Alzheimer were considered medical
conditions, and were treated by using psychotherapy and drug
treatment.
Islamnever denied
the importance of scientific treatments as long as it does not
bring harm to the body and mind of an individual and in-line with
the shariah. Last but not least, the popular
mental
healthmyths in Muslim community is that, people who are having
symptoms of mental illness have weak iman and religious people do
not get depressed or anxious. In other words, only those who have
weak iman will ever get depressed, and no true Muslim will
therefore suffer from depression. In Quran, it is mentioned by
Allah about the story of the prophet
