Search for Love
True love is rare and very hard to find. In the book The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, Gogol proves this to the reader. He goes through many different girlfriends and lovers with none of them working out in the end. Even though none of his relationships work out, he dates many different types of girls, and his idealistic girl changes through each period of his life depending on what he needs to adapt to his hybrid lifestyle.
Gogols very first interaction with a girl was at a college party before he had graduated high school. Gogol was not really looking for anything in Kim. He was young and had never even been kissed before. The idea of an older, pretty girl wanting to talk to him and even kiss him was enough to attract him to show more content
In chapter 8, he goes on a date set up by his mother with Moushimi, an old familyfriend. Before the date, Nikhil is not very hopeful that this will become anything. He remembers Moushimi as a weird, unattractive girl who scarcely talked and he is only going on the date to please his mother. However, upon seeing Moushimi for the first time in years, he is pleasantly surprised. Moushimi is now attractive and after talking for a while Nikhil decides that this may actually lead somewhere. This is meeting is shortly after the death of his father. Ever since Ashokes death, Nikhil had felt guilty and had been desperately trying to get reattached to his culture. This was primarily what attracted Nikhil to Moushimi. They were right for each other at the time because he wanted to please his mother and be a part of his culture again. Eventually they get married with a traditional Indian wedding to please them rather than their parents. However, during the wedding the book says, They bump into each other Theyve barely said a word to each other all evening, (Lahiri 202). The wedding is the first hint that the reader gets that this relationship might not be meant to be. It becomes evident that though the relationship fit their needs and pleased their family, it did not go much farther beyond that. They were only doing what was easy. Just over a year into the marriageMoushimi begins having an affair. Once Nikhil finds out the marriage is ended, and shortly thereafter, the book ends
