Alexander Fleming was a Scottish bacteriologist. He lived from 1881 – 1955 and in that time he studied at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School at the University of London. While studying at St. Mary’s he won an award for becoming top medical student. He also served as a physician in World War I.
On September 28th, 1928, Fleming discovered that in his Petri dish where he was studying the bacteriaStaphylococcus aureus (which is usually harmless unless it becomes an infection and can be found in your nose and your skin) there was a mould surrounding the bacteria. The mould created a substance that stopped the growth of the bacteria. He called it “mould juice” at first, but then he named it penicillin. After testing it he found that it stopped the growth of other bacteria and infections. Fleming knew that penicillin had potential and if he was able to purify it, penicillin could be used as an injectable antibiotic medicine. He experimented with the mould with two young researches, but failed to try to isolate the substance …show more content…
There was a problem at first as it was hard to produce large amounts of penicillin, so when penicillin was first used in the U.S.A, they used nearly half of their supply. Only in 1943 penicillin started to be produced in large amounts. There were arguments about who should get the most credit for penicillin even though Howard Florey, Alexander Fleming and Florey’s co-worker Ernst Chain all shared the Nobel Prize in 1945. Alexander Fleming was knighted in 1994, during WWII.

Penicillin is now one of the world’s biggest antibiotic medicines. It has saved millions of lives since it was discovered. Penicillin is made in different forms (pill, capsule, injection) and it is used to fight infections caused by bacteria such as:
• Blood poisoning
• Salmonella
