On the peak of
the highest mountain in the Himalayas, the goddesses and gods had
gathered from across the globe to make a monumental decision.
Music, in all its aspects, had been known to the immortals for
millennia, but humans had not yet become acquainted with it. The
question had arisen of whether the mortals should be allowed to get
a taste of such a heavenly delight. Thoth, the Egyptian God of
Wisdom, had been asked to arbitrate the meeting: This discussion
is now open to anyone who would like to express an opinion. I
think its a detestable idea to let the mortals get their hands on
Music! thundered Jupiter, king of the Roman gods. Its much too
precious, much too divine for them. Osiris and Isis from Egypt
voiced their thoughts: It is true, began Isis, that

is a danger. Music already has such a powerful force on usyes it
has, Odin! that it might drive mortals mad with its beauty I
think Music would bring harmony to humans, interrupted The Jade
Emperor from China. No! cried Jupiter. Silence! shouted Thoth.
After everyone calmed down, the discussion continued. The final
decision was that humans were too inferior to have such a heavenly
grace as Music. Coyote, the North American trickster god, however,
devised a clever plan to outsmart the gods. Just as the immortals
were leaving, he started singing an irresistible melody, and the
gods all sighed at the sound of it. They didnt realize the tune
was so catchy that they wouldnt be able to get it out of their
heads! This, of course, was exactly what Coyote wanted. When the
immortals went back to their own peoples, they could not help but
hum the bewitching melody, even in the presence of mortals! This
was how humans finally came to know Musiclong, long agothanks to
