A philosopher named Will Durant states, “Civilization begins with order, grows with liberty, and dies with chaos.” Durant claims that civilization starts out with order, grows with power and then dies with mayhem, which is demonstrated in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. British schoolboys are stranded on a tropical island after their plane is shot down within the midst of World War II. Elected leader Ralph, with some help from Piggy, creates rules such as, taking turns with speaking to maintain housing, sanitation, food and a rescue fire. A falling out occurs when the boys disagree on who should be leader; this results in Jack creating his own tribe. Chaos sets into place when Jack’s tribe steals Piggy’s glasses, kills Piggy …show more content…
Jack's job is to keep the fire going, he fails to complete that task by going hunting instead. During that time, a ship is spotted on the horizon. Since the fire isn’t going, the ship doesn’t see their signal smoke. Ralph and Piggy become very angry at Jack. Jack gets tired of their lectures and unexpectedly, “Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked Piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks. Piggy cried out in terror” (Golding 71). Piggy’s glasses crack in one lense. The breaking of Piggy’s glasses demonstrates a crack in the boys humanity. Jack doesn’t care about the fact that Piggy can now only see out of one eye. After the lense cracked, a series of events happened in which everything started going downhill. Jack made decisions that the rest of the boys followed that were not good for the future of the island, such as ignoring the fire. When the boys start ignoring the fire, order is lost because the boys don’t follow the rule of keeping the fire going. Overall, the glasses signify the future of the island because it is like “seeing through the looking glass”, and when the glasses crack, it represents the downfall of order to come in the future. Afterwards, Jack and his hunters catch and killa pig, except they have one problem, they don’t have something to start the fire to cook the pig. Jack comes up with a conclusion …show more content…
Jack decides to go hunting and leaves the fire unattended. The unattended fire dies out. A ship comes along while Jack is hunting and there is no signal fire for the ship to see. Jack grows very angry and hollers at Jack, “There was a ship out there. You said you’d keep the fire going and you let it out!” (Golding 70). This is the first time the fire is ignored. Jack breaks an important rule that others soon followed. This marked the beginning of Jack making his hunting more important than the upkeep of the fire. If the boys don’t follow the rules, there will be no more order. At the end of the book during the manhunt, Jack and his tribe light a fire in hope to run Jack out of hiding so that they can kill him. This fire spreads across the entire island. In Ralph’s eyes, “He saw a shelter burst into flames and the fire flapped at his right shoulder and there was the glitter of water” (Golding 200). One rule of the fire is to keep it small and contained. Jack ignores this rule and lets the fire out of control. The lack of control of the fire results in complete destruction of the island and their civilization. The fire represents rescue, ironically, when the boys are at the verge of the complete loss of their civilization, rescue arrives and saves the boys from
