Although both the movie and novel adaptations of The Woman in Black followed along the same narrative, the movie altered or changed different aspects of the novel such as how certain characters acted, added scenes where children kill themselves, and had a more focused supernatural element so that it could transition to filmmore easily. The first detail that the movie consistently altered was how different characters acted. Characters such as Mr. Jerome or the Gifford Arms keeper were much less friendly to Arthur, and would often avoid him or keep their confrontations with him brief. Since the film was marketed as a horror movie, the supernatural element of the story was more abundant and featured occurrences such as spirits talking through Mrs. Daily, both Arthur and Mr. Daily seeing ghosts of dead children, and the woman in black being much more present, menacing, and aggressive. The novel, on the other hand, is much subtler with its content. In the book, Mr. Jerome, Mr. Daily, and the innkeeper are all very kind to Arthur, and are only distant when he brings up his business at Eel Marsh House. Until the end of the book, Arthur has no knowledge regarding the fact that children die after a sighting of the woman in black occurs. The only time a child dies in the book is at the end when Arthur’s son dies in a pony and trap accident. Finally, most of the supernatural elements that occur in the book are very subtle, and happen away from Arthur. Throughout the book, Mr. Daily and Arthur never see the ghost of dead children, Mrs. Daily never has spirits talk through her, and besides Arthur sighting the woman in black a couple times, she is not physically present for most of the book and does not act aggressively towards Arthur.
