This paper will
identify the ethnic identifications within individuals. Ethnicity
is part of everyones identity development. Individuals may have
one ethnicity or multiple, depending on their current location,
homelands, generations, religion, environment, language/dialect,
physical appearance, and more. A cultural individual is considered
ethnic either by being first, second, or third generation.
According to Phinney (1989), there are four stages of ethnic
identity development: diffuse, foreclosed, moratorium, and
achieved. They describe when an individual explores or does not
explore their own ethnicity, and accepting clarification and
understanding of ethnicity. An individual can be placed within
these stages throughout their developing lives. It is important to
recognize these stages within an individual to better apprehend
their identity and where they perceive their own identity in their
position. The interviewee identified himself as an American. He
mentioned that he came from an immigrant family, but was not
comfortable elaborating on the topic. He primarily only visualizes
himself as an American and nothing more. His view about his
ethnicity did not change from his adolescent years to his current
age. He was confidence he was a true American without any

This stage
states, little or no exploration of ethnicity, but apparent
clarity about ones own ethnicity. Feelings about ones ethnicity
may be either positive or negative, depending on ones
socialization experiences (Phinney, 1989). According to this
interviewee, it is uncertain if he developed a positive or negative
perspective. He still did not explore further in his ethnicity, but
he seems content with his decision. He understands that Americans
have more career opportunities and does not want to lose his chance
by changing his ethnic
