Published in 1779, and still considered “one of the most popular songs in the English-speaking world” “Amazing Grace” was perhaps John Newton’s greatest known music compositions (Phipps). Inspired by Newton’s personal testimony, this influential hymn suggests how he had graciously experienced forgiveness from God for living vilely and had been given a second chance at life with new eyes to explore his true purpose in this world. As a result of his transformed life, which his hymn so beautifully describes, he entered the priesthood and mentored many lost souls including an English politician named William Wilberforce. To this day the song, “Amazing Grace,” is still being sung in churches and many other places frequently. The lyrics affect people deeply as they speak of God’s favor on man and his lost condition. This song was Newton’s piece of music mostly associated with the slave trade. “Many have speculated and think “Amazing Grace” originated as the tune of a slave song” (Rogers). Newton never stopped regretting his participation in the awful slave trade and used his influence as a minister and hymn writer to encourage those with whom he would have contact to fight on behalf of the abolition of slavery. Perhaps Newton felt a new sense of God’s grace as they celebrated victory and acknowledged how God used him, a guilty slave trader, to have a role in bringing the unjust treatment of human beings to an end.
