Instead, Leah becomes fluent in three languages, makes friends, and takes advantage of the lessons’ the Congo has to offer her. Readers’ can understand that Leah is open to this new way of life because she is young. While humans’ are young it is easier for us to psychologically grasp new things and we are more open to new ideas. Kingsolver uses her character Leah to to show us that each generation is unique and juvenile children tend to mold to new suggestions within cultures because they do not have a cultural norm. Since Leah moves here at an inexperienced age, she has an appreciation for the Congolese culture, which shapes her into the woman she becomes at the end of the book. Not only does Leah’s psychological ways of thinking change, her morals do too. While she still carries some of her morals from her upbringing, Leah also develops her own morals. Leah does not appreciate the United States trying to “protect” the Congo from communism and she feels that communism has done more for the country than what freedom can. Leah, as a child sees her mom taking to the care of her father and their family. Her mom, Orleanna has to prepare food, get water that is not harmful, make everyone take their pills to protect them from malaria, and more. Many people are under the impression that women have only jobs in within the house which involve cooking, cleaning, and tending to children. Unlike most women, Leah adapts to her physical environment and understands that it is her duty to attend to her family. She does not complain, instead she embraces this task to the best of her ability and she is not afraid to ask for help along the way. Leah protects her children from diseases by vaccinating them and life here is not easy. There are numerous manual things that must be done to do the simplest things, like cooking dinner. Leah has to boil water to ensure it is drinkable, walk long distances to get these resources, and find food to nourish their bodies. In some parts of the novel when her husband, Anatole is in jail, she runs the household all on her own, with the assistance of Elisabet Ngembe.
