Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) wrote a collection of many novels
but became widely renowned for his short stories. Growing up,
Hawthorne was not the happiest, he had been relieved from many
jobs. After the loss of his mother, he fell into a deep depression
and began to pour out his thoughts and anger into his writing.
Criticizing his townsfolks and neighbors and recasting them in his
stories as hypocritical Puritans. One year later he had published
the book that would later be known as,

The fact that a rosebush began to sprout there, was believed to symbolize grace and forgiveness. Since the prison had such a dark setting, it is really unexpected to see a rosebush in such a location and the prison itself is symbolism for the evil and sin. Throughout the story, something that Hester strives for is her own personal freedom. She does not want to be frowned on by her community, but at the same time refuses to remove her scarlet letter. We as readers know that she could of left, but that is the personal freedom that everyone in Boston had unlike her. This can be understood through an excerpt in Julian Hawthornes review, which states, She is so much alive as to live independently of her actual appearances in the story...society has ceased to have any concern with her. We trample you down, society says in effect to those who break its laws, not by any means in order to save your soul (as cited in The Atlantic,1886). Julian Hawthorne viewed Hester as one who focused too much on her scarlet letter, while it did bring her happiness, casting it away only brought her more attention to her and towns folks began to acknowledge her. Nathaniel Hawthornehad been one of the first to implement a Puritan society and culture into American Literature. He is considered one of American Literatures vanguard writers and has had a huge impact on Romanticism being display in writing. To date, a number of diverse writers including Stephen King, Susan Lori Parks, and Rick Moody have altered and shaped some of his stories into their own. His use of symbolism is what adds more depth and conveys more emotions in his stories. As his style continues to live on so does his work in and beyond the
