Explain the origins and the concept of the term group
dynamics.
Group dynamics was founded by “Kurt Lewin” to study group
decision, group productivity, group interaction, group cohesiveness
and group communication. The underlying assumption was that the
laws of the specific activities of group irrespective of the
structure of the group. Group dynamics is the study of groups, and
also a general term for group process. In group dynamics, the
phrase “group process” refers to the understanding of the behavior
of people in groups, such as task groups, that are trying to solve
a problem or make a decision. Thus, “Group dynamics is concerned
with the interaction of forces among group members in a social
situation.” Good Response
Explain three aspects of group dynamics that can have a
negative effect on team performance.
1. Awful communication To have “good communication” at firm
requires that you implement far more than just a two way
conversation system. You need to truly listen to what others are
saying or requesting and teach them how to communicate updates as
soon as they are available. Same goes for problems.2.Favoritism
Giving one employee an advantage over the other will certainly have
a negative effect on the atmosphere at your office, and it will
unavoidably make your other workers feel like they don’t matter as
much as they think they do.3. Highly competitive surrounding
without clear and defined group goals. It is important to encourage
rivalry at the office, but only to some extent. Working effectively
as part of a team is incredibly important for output quality,
morale, and retention. Thus, it is of great value for you that your
workers feel like they’re not always competing with one another.
Good
Discuss in 3 to 4 paragraphs the phenomenon of social loafing
in groups, its negative consequences and the effect of group size
and culture.
Social loafing refers to the concept that people are prone to
exert less effort on a task if they are a group versus when they
work alone. The idea of working in a group is typically seen as a
way to improve the accomplishment of a task by pooling the skills
and talents of individuals in that group. But, in some groups,
there is a tendency on the part of the participants to contribute
less to the group’s goals than if they were doing the same tsk
themselves. Talking about the negative consequences of the social
loafing. Social loafing has negative consequences for both the
group and the individuals in the group. The group dynamics is
affected when certain individuals are seen as weak contributions to
the group purpose. It tends to split the group and fosters a lack
of cohesion. For example, if only five of them work, it will often
create an in group (those members that are working hard) and ‘out’
group (those members that are not contributing as much). Resentment
can easily build between the two factions, causing less
productivity and more emotional tension that a cohesive group would
experience. Individual in group can also be affected by social
loafing. While there is a disparity of effort between members of a
group, individuals start to gauge their own effort based on what
others are doing instead of maintaining a standard of excellence
toward achieving the goal. This lowers the level of satisfaction
for the task in all members of the group for example, if a
motivated team member repeatedly feels others are relying on them
to do most of the work, they might deliberately reduce their
workload or even stop collaborating with group members because they
no longer wants to feel exploited by the less productive members.
Now, effect of group size; the larger the group, the more likely it
is the social loafing will occur, for example, if you have ten
members of a group working on a project, it is easier for an
individuals who are not motivated or productive to hide because
there are more people to pick up the slack. Social Loafing, defined
as the tendency to reduce effort when working in a group, continues
to be of interest both to researchers and practitioners. Causes of
social loafing have been examined extensively, with several group
member demographic factors found to be related to the phenomenon.
The connection between motivation loss and culture has proven to be
especially robust, as has the link between gender and behavior in
work groups. Good Response
Discuss three strategies for preventing social loafing in
groups.
The three strategies that can be used to prevent social
loafing are giving below; Keep the team small Develop the rules of
engagement Assign separate and distinct contribution for every team
member.
Discuss in a paragraph the phenomenon of Groupthink.
Groupthink is a phenomenon that occurs when a group of
individuals reaches a consensus without critical reasoning or
evaluation of the consequences or alternatives. Groupthink is based
on a common desire not to upset the balance of a group of people.
This desire creates a dynamic within a group whereby creativity and
individuality tend to be stifled in order to avoid conflict.
Outline three advantages and three disadvantages of group
decision-making.
The three advantages and disadvantages of group decision
making are given below: Advantages 1. More information: A group is
better equipped as far as information is concerned. An individual
cannot have all the information that is available to a group as it
consists of several individuals. 2. Diversity of views: A group
always has the advantage of varied views. This is because a group
always has more than one member, and since every member is unique,
there is bound to be a variety in their views also. This is also
the reason why there are varied approaches to solving a problem. As
group decisions tend to cover a greater area, they provide a better
insight for decision-making. 3. Encourages people’s participation:
A group usually provides a platform for people to present their
ideas. Group dynamics is more likely to draw out participation from
people who may otherwise be hesitant to talk or interact. It
encourages people to take an initiative as they feel part of the
decision making process. Usually there is no individual onus
(burden) in the event of failure, which makes it easier for people
to come up with suggestions and solutions to problems.
Disadvantages 1. Time-consuming: A group involves several
individuals. Getting them organized, planning and coordinating
their meetings, defining and explaining to them the purpose of a
meeting and the goals, and finally reaching a solution or arriving
at a decision can be quite cumbersome. Making decisions in a group
can, thus, be time-consuming. The time loss involved in group
dynamics cannot be ignored. 2. Compromise decisions: The need to
arrive at a group decision sometimes results in a compromise. The
solution offered is not essentially the best. It is, instead, a
compromise acceptable as a mid-point to all concerned. There are
different demands and social pressures, and members may agree to a
proposal without really evaluating it. Such support may not be
wholehearted. 3. Expensive: Group decision-making is quite
expensive in terms of time, money, energy and man-hours. There is
also a theory which says that the larger a group gets, the less is
the individual contribution from each member. Good Response
Discuss three team-building techniques, using examples to
illustrate your answer.
Good Communication through facilitating open discussion
Incentivising cohesion and participation inn team activities
Assigning project roles to promote team work
Explain the concept of a team consensus.
A consensus decision is one that all team members can
support. It may be, but is not necessarily, the alternative most
preferred by all members. When true consensus is reached through a
process in which everyone participates, the output is usually a
superior quality decision.
Discuss two methods that can be used to assist teams to reach
consensus.
Consensus is defined as “an opinion or position reached by a
group as a whole” by the American Heritage Dictionary. Consensus
decision making is the process used to generate widespread
agreement within a group. These instructions will guide you through
that process. Methods include: Co-operation. All the people
involved collaborate and build upon each other’s concerns and
suggestions to come up with a decision or solution that will
satisfy everyone in the group, rather than just the majority (while
the minority is ignored). Solution-mindedness. An effective
decision-making body works towards a common solution, despite
differences. This comes through collaboratively shaping a proposal
until it meets as many of the participants’ concerns as possible.
Good Response
Explain four simple steps for resolving a workplace dispute.
Dealing with conflict in the workplace can cost employees and
managers time, productivity, and emotional stress. Having
organization-wide conflict resolution steps in place, however, will
help everyone know how to tackle conflict constructively, instead
of avoiding it or letting it get out of hand. Below are 4 conflict
resolution steps that are essential to anyone’s conflict management
“toolkit.” 1. Get clarity on the conflict 2.Talk to all the
stakeholders 3. Establish Priorities 4. Work towards a solution
Good Response
Explain why is it important to have an effective dispute
resolution process?
It is important to have an effective dispute resolution
process because dispute resolution processes have several
advantages. For instance, many dispute resolution processes are
help in encouraging healthy debate while also ensuring that in case
of disputes the solution is given through fair and impartial
channels. Certain processes can provide the parties involved with
greater participation in reaching a solution, as well as more
control over the outcome of the dispute. In addition, dispute
resolution processes are less formal and have more flexible rules
than the trial court.

Using the Internet, research both informal and formal staff
reward and recognition schemes and make notes on what you find.
The following links will provide some examples.
https://allaplusessays.com/order
https://allaplusessays.com/order
Choose and develop at least five examples that would be
appropriate for your team in the case study.
1. TAKING CARE OF THE FAMILY: Google – Surely you’ve heard
all about Google’s outdoor sports facilities, free food and more,
but there’s another perk that should be noted. If a U.S. employee
passes away while working for the tech giant, the employee’s spouse
or domestic partner receives 50% of the deceased’s salary, no
matter how long or short his tenure, every year for the next
decade.2. GIVING FREE VACATIONS: This is one thing that we noticed
to be a trend throughout the top 100 companies list. For example,
Ultimate Software, the developer of people-management software such
as Quicken Loans treats workers to a free vacation every two
years.3. BIG MONEY INCENTIVES: Hilcorp Energy Company promised
staff in 2010 that if the company doubles its production rate and
reserves by 2015, every employee will get a check for $100,000. An
earlier met goal rewarded 400 employees with $50,000 toward a new
car.4. SAYING THANK YOU!: Often times, employees just want to be
recognized for their good work. A simple “Good Job” from the CEO
can go a long way. Employees at NetApp often get a chance to
receive special recognition. Vice Chairman Tom Mendoza asks
managers to notify him when they “catch someone doing something
right,” and then calls 10 to 20 employees every day to thank
them.5. REWARDING SAFETY: Chesapeake Energy paid out more than $8
million in “safety bonuses” in 2011 to more than 6,000 employees
across the company for following safe work practices.6. KEEPING
EMPLOYEES HEALTHY: At JM Family Enterprises, health and wellness
centers staffed by doctors, nurses, and other health care
professionals now function at eight locations of this Toyota
distributor, providing primary care, wellness exams, complete
physicals, vaccines, and lab tests at little to no cost to
employees.7. ON-SITE PERSONAL MASSAGES & MENTAL HEALTH
RESOURCES: Employees at Mayo Clinic can get massages while its
Arizona facility’s “stress-free zone” offers resources to cope with
work anxieties.8. HAVING FUN AT THE OFFICE: Stryker, a
medical-device manufacturer, keeps things light by offering
Ping-Pong tables on-site and having “pie-your-manager”
competitions.9. RELOADABLE GIFT CARDS: Producers Assistance
Corporation, in an attempt to refresh their safety program, chose
reloadable gift cards as an incentive. Here’s how it works: when an
employee takes an action, like attending a safety meeting, points
are loaded onto their card. The lure of point collecting (and
spending) has focused employees back on doing the right thing to be
safe. After a 6-month trial, participation had more than doubled
and there was a significant decline in the incident rate.10.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: Intel offers $50,000 for tuition
reimbursementand an eight-week paid sabbatical every seven years,
which 4067 employees took advantage of just last year.11. EMPLOYEE
APPRECIATION WEEK: The insurance giant Aflac hosts an annual
six-day appreciation week; last year it included theme park visits,
film showings, skating, and daily giveaways.12. IMMEDIATE VACATION
TIME: Hasbro, the world’s second-largest toy company, enhanced its
vacation policy by giving new employees three weeks off in their
first year instead of having to wait five years.13. PROFIT-SHARING
PLAN: Seventy-eight percent of Robert W. Baird & Co. is owned
by non-senior management. All hourly and salaried associates enjoy
annual profit-sharing contributions from a pool that represents 10%
of Baird’s pretax net operating income.14. OFFSITE EMPLOYEE
ACTIVITIES: GoDaddy sets money aside every month that is used to
take employees off-site for activities during paid work hours. This
isn’t a once a year thing, either. They do this once a month, EVERY
month. Recent GoDaddy expeditions included: whitewater rafting,
gold panning, cooking classes, and trapeze classes. The employees
obviously love it, and who wouldn’t?15. THE MONTHLY HERO: Zappo’s
has a rather unconventional “recognition” program in place. Their
program is called the “Monthly Hero” program and here’s how it
works. Every month, every Zappo employee is given $50 they can
“give” to a coworker as a bonus and as a way of to recognize that
coworker for doing a great job and being awesome. Once a month
Zappo executives pick a name from the workers that were given the
$50 bonus and dub him/her the “Monthly Hero.” The company then
proceeds to throw a mini-parade to announce the monthly hero
through a rolling sound system that’s accompanied by noise makers
and playing of the song “I Need A Hero” by Bonnie Tyler. If all
that wasn’t amazing enough, the monthly hero then wins a covered
parking spot, a $150 Zappo’s gift card, and a cape to proudly wear!

Dear General Manager, I would like to take this opportunity
to present my proposal for an updated reward and recognition
program for the employees here. I believe, it will be necessary to
achieve the strategic goals of the association and sustain it. The
salient features of the plans that I have developed have been
included below: 1. Public Recognition: Announcement on Social Media
Celebration of Appreciation It will help in employee engagement as
well as community engagement 2. Tangible Rewards: Gift Cards for
stores that offer sponsorship to the games could be arranged for
good performers. 3. Offer educational Opportunities For volunteers
in the 18-28 age groups we can offer educational opportunities for
diploma courses for them to be able to better improve themselves. I
hope that you find these programs acceptable. I would be waiting
for your feedback on the same.Regards, Marketing and Communications

Carefully read the following:
Two staff at FSCE have lodged complaints with you, the
Communications Officer, about the Marketing Officer’s work.
The staff complain that Jackie is often talking to friends on
her mobile and so when the office phone rings they answer the
phone. Even when Jackie can see they are trying to answer queries
that directly relate to her work, she does not end her personal
call. This not only takes other staff member’s time in answering
such calls, but also then to make notes for Jackie on the call.
The staff have said that the behaviour is recent, and until
recently Jackie has always been hard-working and reliable.
You need to meet with Jackie to discuss the issue and
identify realistic solutions.

meeting with the Marketing officer, Jackie. I am glad to inform you
that Jackie was receptive to the criticism and accepted the
responsibility for the issue. She noted that this was because of a
personal issue that she was dealing with. Following our
conversation, I recommended that she refrain from using her phone
for personal calls during work hours and if needed can take a break
at flexible timings to complete her personal work. I informed her
that given her praise worthy performance prior to this, I was
confident that she would be able to bounce back. We have created a

co-workers. Based on the peer review of the employees, we can
