name is Ai Wewei. One of his works is called Circle of
Animals/Zodiac Heads. He created this artwork in 2011. His
work has been installed in the Speed Art museum .

2. Ai Wewei is a pretty well-known Chinese artist. He is an
important activist, and he calls attention to human right
violations. As an artist, he expands the definition of art to new
forms of social engagement. In the country he was raised (China)
where free speech is not a right for the citizens and the police
have beaten him up, kept him under house arrest, he still stands
today to make a difference for everyone who is facing these kinds
of problems. One way he can show his protesting is by his art.

Based on time
for the Principles of Design it does not take much time to
understand the meaning of this work, and what it is based on. The
scale and proportion of this work is that the statues of
the
animalsare near a fountain and the statues seem to be big.
Wewei uses many forms in this artwork. He uses cylinders for the
statues, and many different shapes and sizes for the animals
heads.

According to Wewei the meaning of this artwork is that he was
playing with the idea of fake and real, and of nationalist
symbolism. Legend has it that the animals of the zodiac were
chosen by the Jade emperor, the ruler of heaven, who according to
Taoist mythology invited all creatures to join him for a New Years
celebration only twelve showed up, and the years were named in the
order they arrived. The bull would have arrived first, but the rat
sat on his back, jumping off just before they arrived. The rabbit
came in fourth, hopping on stones to cross a
fast-flowing
