The empathise stage focuses on understanding the needs target users, ensuring the design meets all their requirements. Empathising as an initial step in the process, allows the design to structure itself around the needs of the stakeholders involved. Here, the needs of the patient are the key focus of the process. During this stage, the design team utilised several design tools (see Appendix) to understand and visualise the experiences of the patients and to introduce a suitable idea to address them.Patients come from a spectrum of personalities, leading to a spectrum of willingness or resistance to the multitude of requirements for cleaning and maintaining hygiene around the incision site.
