Moore once said If you think anybody is sane you just dont know
enough about them. J.D Salinger continuously suggests that Holden
Caulfield could be mentally ill, by intertwining the events
happening in his life with the twisted and often macabre images and
behaviors that Holden constantly exhibits throughout the novel The
Catcher in the Rye. Holden appears to exhibit three very real and
potentially dangerous mental disorders this is shown through
Holdens questionable actions for example burning matches just to
watch them burn, having vivid images about killing or harming
others, and his constant need to control others lives and that is
just the tip of the questionable iceberg that is Holden. Could

OCD is a
personality disorder often characterized by a constant need for
orderliness, perfectionism, and need for mental and interpersonal
control of ones environment or others. Holden exhibits signs of
OCD continuously throughout The Catcher in the Rye but his OCD is
displayed best when Holden states, Certain things should stay the
way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those
big glass cases and just leave them alone(Salinger 122).This quote
at first might not seem like much, however, in the story Holden is
actually talking about preserving the innocence of others.
Throughout the novel Holden shows a bizarre fixation with the idea
of innocence. Holden talks about how you should just be able to
take innocent people and keep them there it shows that Holden feels
a constant need to take control of the mental and interpersonal
control of others as it suggests that he feels like he should be
able to take people he sees as innocent and keep theme preserved
whether that person wants to stay the same or not. Another factor
that contribute to the Holden OCP theory is that he clearly views
innocence as perfection and when he talks about putting an innocent
person in a glass box so they cant change it shows that Holden
would do anything to protect innocence even if it means protecting
innocence even if it is through physical means. While OCD and NPD
are not extremely dangerous by themselves other evidence proves
that Holden also has
