education of the people of this country the fate of this country
depends, remarked Benjamin Disraeli. In the United States of
America, we need to focus on education to prepare the next
generation for leadership. Unfortunately, the U.S. has a widening
socioeconomic status-based achievement gap (Huang, 2015, p. 1).
This means that not all children are receiving the same quality of

their future. In spite of the belief that all schools are
adequately funded and all students have the same opportunities for
success, the American government should increase funding for the
education of children from low socioeconomic backgrounds to
eliminate the achievement

In 2001, President Bush reintroduced the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) to close the achievement gap. It authorized school vouchers that would pay for students to switch to better educational institutions; however, this act punished lower performing schools, claiming them to be incompetent, thus hurting the students still attending those schools (League, 2011). No Child Left Behind was a failure because it did not get to the root of the problem: by only enabling some students, many others were hurt and the achievement gap actually widened (Huang, 2015, p. 4-5).
In 2009, Obama introduced Race to the Top, a program that awarded funds to emphasize competition. It increased teacher pay based on educator effectiveness; however, the incentive was not effective because it evaluated teachers based only on students standardized test scores (League, 2011).
Americas national government has tried to help schools, but has been overall unsuccessful. Though both No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top had good intentions, neither program fully addressed the countrys needs. The government needs to provide support for all schools and all children by putting innovative, effective teachers in every classroom and giving them the supplies they need to lead the countrys children to show more content
America can close the gap by empowering students from low-SES families, giving them the same opportunities as their peers. Though U.S. dollars will be spent in effort to better education, the money will not be wastededucated adults give more back to the economy than their less successful counterparts. Money is already being spent on the cause, but by reallocating those funds into slightly different places, the funding could result in successful rather than failed programs. Funds are a major player when it comes to quality of education; just because one cannot afford an education does not mean he or she does not deserve
