Living in the
United States means we have the ability and responsibility to
effect change for a better society. Were a free country with many
rights to our humanity. However, there are also a lot of downsides.
To live as an American, we need to accept both the good and the bad
about this country. We revolted against England to be what we are
now, then eventually fought ourselves over the morality of being
able to own slaves, and then the World Wars happened. In between,
we had our
Great
Depressionin our economy, then World War II gave us the boost
we needed in our economy. Now here we are, trillions of dollars in
debt that the next generations need to pay off, a so-so education
system, and an oblivious society. I dont hate this country.

To be honest,
Im glad that this is the thing that is being worked on the most by
people. Weve had writers, politicians, even the songwriters of
today write about this. Most of the time they are about the
everyday problems of today and are still relevant today. My
Chemical Romance wrote in their song, Teenagers: The boys and
girls in the clique, the awful names that they stick, youre never
gonna fit in much kid. This song is obviously about what people
think of people when theyre not the same as them, or take Lily
Allens song, Hard Out Here, about sexism for example: Inequality,
promises that is here to stay. Always trust the injustice cause
its not going away. President Carter stated: The erosion of our
confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and
the political fabric of America. Though poet Claude McKay was in
the minority before the Civil rights movement he wrote: I love
this cultured hell that tests my youth!I think he wrote that and
believes that because he knew America could change for the better.
I believe that it what people tend to overlook in things like songs
and poems and speeches is that they write about the problems of
then so we can fix it now. You see, Im glad my English teachers
throughout the years presented viewpoints because it allowed me to
see that there are people trying to convey this message that there
are things that still need fixing. I like
