Biological
warfare has been implemented since ancient times. Assyrians were
reported to poison enemy wells with ergot, a fungus that grows on
rye wheat, causing the enemies to hallucinate after ingesting the
tainted water. (1) During the Middle Ages in Europe individuals
corpses who had died from the
bubonic
plague, caused by bacterium
Yersinia
pestis, were used as projectiles and fired from catapults to
infect citizens of besieged castles. It is speculated that plague
corpses launched against the Genoese by the
Mongols in 1347 was the cause of the
Black
Deathin Europe, which would have arrived by means of
Genoese ships. (2) Using plague infected corpses was
implemented up until 1710, when Russians catapulted the corpses at
Swedish forces
