The English
born (7th June 1965) Damien Steven Hirst is one of the most famous
conceptual artists working today. He became a member of the young
British artists group in the 1990s; he was their most prominent
member. The most obvious theme with Damien Hirsts work is death.
Some of his most famous pieces often involve dead, dissected
animals in big containers. As a student, he worked in a mortuary
for some time. This experience seemed to have highly influenced the
young student, and Hirst would later use that experience to
showcase his curious love of death. One of his art works For the
love of god (see figure 1) is a life sized, diamond covered,
platinum skull that was moulded from an 18th century skull bought
by Hirst in London. The skull is set with real teeth, 8,601 high
quality diamonds,

The piece
features a decapitated cows head, sitting in a glass & steel
container, lying in its own pool of blood. The white box contains
maggots, that then feeds on the head and transforms into adult
flies. Another function exists in the box, a fly zapper that after
many days kills and continues to kill the flies, until more flies
emerge, repeating the cycle over and over again. The materials used
seem to be expensive, like most of his works. They also require the
assistance of many people to set up such instillations. This seems
to diminish the creativity and determination of the artist, as they
must pay others to create their subworks. The idea of putting a
decapitated animal head on display to show the raw power of death
is a bit pretentious. The only unique thing is the continuing life
and death cycle of the flies. Damien Hirst comes across as more of
a shrewd business man than he does an artist. To pay others to
complete a project for you, to then give yourself all the credit
and money after the objects completion is a clever scam that seems
to rule the modern art
