For our Unit 4 discussion, choose a crime that is often plea bargained. Discuss the impact on the victim when plea bargains happen and what responsibility the criminal justice system has in protecting the victim?
Warran Sapp a former NFL defensive tackle from 1995 to 2007 won
a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay and NFL defensive player of the year
before becoming a NLF Network sports analyst. Unfortunately soon
after the Super Bowl, he was busted for soliciting two prostitutes
for $300 each. Sapp was arrested February 2 on suspicion of assault
and soliciting a prostitute after a disturbance was reported at a
downtown Phoenix hotel (Jarvis, 2015). Charged with a soliciting
prostitution and one count of assault according to court documents.
Sapp entered a plea agreement on charges of soliciting a prostitute and assault by pleading guilty to those two misdemeanors in exchange for completing 2 counseling program. Those classes include ‘Prostitution Solicitation Diversion Program’ the 2nd is essentially an anger management course and if Sap fails to complete the prostitution programs in 160 he is faced to serve 30 days in jail according to TMZ. Sapp was also ordered to pay restitution to the two prostitutes, one will receive $150 and the other $1, 171.24 (tmz staff, 2015).
One can agree that, Warran Sapp benefited from the plea
bargaining by avoiding major jail time and just being able to
attend classes. At the same time, the negative outcome would be
that he had to plead guilty. This is usually the case with plea
deals, having to plead guilty but yet providing lesser punishment.
Other celebrity examples such as Sapp’s exist like Robert Downey Jr
who was involved in a drug case and avoided jail time by accepting
a plea deal.
I believe plea bargaining process exist regardless of its possible negative effects because it could give suspects who are rather knowingly guilty without having to go through trial and its long process. Allowing them to continue productivity in society with the awareness of their obligations to the legal system.

2)I think that there are several offenses that get plea bargains that have affects the victim. One of these offenses are assaults. It can range from simple assault to aggravated assault and it can even be domestic in nature. All too often arrests are made over an assault and they are given a slap on the wrist because it was not considered a severe offense. Plea bargains have been essential in the criminal justice system because as criminal courts become ever more crowded, prosecutors and judges alike feel increased pressure to move cases quickly through the system. Criminal trialscan take days, weeks, or sometimes months, while guilty pleas can often be arranged in minutes( NOLO). I think that this can be a problem because the case needs to be resolved to make room for more important issues and they do not take into account what the victim goes through. Most of the time the victim feels that it was a waste of time and they feel like they were not protected and worse yet they feel scared that the suspect may cause even more harm to them. I had a victim of domestic violence feel like nothing was done and they were in even more danger because they had their husband arrested. Victims shouldn't have to feel this way. I think that victims should feel safe to come forward and they should be involved in the process and they should be aware of all of the possible outcomes instead of being surprised that the case was plea bargained and they had no clue. I think this should change
