Police Chief John J. Feeney speaks out about the lack of trust within communities of color and the law enforcement that reigns upon them.

Chief of Police at California State University, Chico, John J. Feeney reckons the actions behind the “Black Lives Matter” movement have a few underlying problems, but the main matter we have to deal with results in the lack of trust between these opposing sides. Although this is not a permanent fix, the process of mending a relationship starts off with a simple, sincere and apologetic statement. Starting with acknowledging the wrongdoing of officers, because he believes it will go a long way. Not speaking for the “Black Lives Matter” campaign, he hopes that it will bring officers the “opportunity to develop conversations that are going to be progressive” in finding a solution to the matter. With trust in a community, Feeney touches on the amount of mutual respect necessary to maintain these relationships. With a job to do, he trusts that these actions made by officers should be “based off of behavior and not the color of a persons' skin” Feeney said. This will provide each department with the confidence that any race“may go into a community of color and not be intimidated by people because of the color of their skin and their culture” Feeney said. This supports his idea that if officers go into a community with respect, they will earn the respect of the citizens to help bridge the differences. To put his beliefs into action, Chief Feeney held a Community Night Out for the students at Chico State to have that chance to build relationships with their law enforcement. This night out brought the “athletic teams, the Greeks and everybody else that came together on campus”.
