I think the
main problem is that you took the metaphor the sergeant major gave
literally, as if he meant, all one has to do is get a haircut and
good PT then poof that's leadership.
----------
The sergeant major saying, How do you expect to lead these
soldiers if youre not doing things like getting your hair cut or
going to PT? Does not in anyway "reduce
leadershipto
a haircut and PT." Its a metaphor, nothing more, you simply
misunderstood that.
-------------
It's telling you that leadership is by example, therefore, if
YOU are not going to bother with simple common tasks like hygiene
and physical fitness, your men probably won't either. The obvious
conclusion would be that it would snowball into poor leadership and
poor mission readiness of anyone under you.

---------------
At the end, this article seems to come heavy to the defense
of PT run drops, and acts as if maintaining physical fitness
standards is ridiculous. Wow, talk about the "new army" mentality.
-----------------
Personally, I think that we in the armed forces are the
cutting edge of our countries sword, and that the least we could do
is maintain our sharpness which includes appearance and fitness.
The article on the other hand, seems to be basically defending poor
hygiene and physical fitness as if it should be part our
militaryand
even embraced. Its as if the writer of this article is part of the
"no child left behind" nonsense, where as long as someone says they
want to be a
soldier, that
should be good enough. To me, that's nonsense.

If I did not know better, I would swear this letter was
written by a boot or an angry mother of a boot that got kicked out
of boot camp or an out of shape full timer shit-bird who failed a
PT test and is under threat of being kicked out.
