Your challenge is to learn enough about the business model
& performance of your chosen business so
that you can describe, in no more than a 5-page report, how
your chosen business has come to be the
business it is today , the “as is”, and what you believe it
will be tomorrow, the “to be”.
To do that, you will need to:
A. Understand and be prepared to describe the organization’s
current overall environment using
examples of:
The Macro Environment: How the five general elements in the
external environment are currently
influencing the strategic decisions of your chosen business
(Chapter 3 Pages 44-49).
The Competitive Environment: How the five competitive forces
that shape strategy (Porter’s Five Forces
Chapter 3: Pages 49-54) are currently shaping the strategy of
your chosen business.
The Organizational Environment: How the relevant forces
inside the boundaries of your chosen
business are being leveraged to overcome challenges in the
external environment (see Chapter 3 Pages
60-65). These include: the managers, employees, resources,
and the Organizational Culture, including
Values described as the underlying qualities and desirable
behaviors that are important to the
organization
B. Write the report:
1. Begin the report with a statement of your Working
Assumptions, about your chosen business before
doing the research.
2. Follow with a description of your understanding of the
current performance of your chosen business
in the current macro, competitive and organizational
environment, the “AS IS” after doing your
research.
3. Continue with:
– a description of Your Projection of the Macro &
Competitive changes you believe will impact the
industry of your chosen business over the next 3-5 years.
– a description of the impact of the Macro & Competitive
changes on the Organizational environment of
your chosen business, the needed performance improvements in
your chosen business, and the reasons
you believe your chosen business will succeed or fail in
implementing the needed performance
improvements over the next 3-5 years, the “TO BE”.
– be sure to support your case using the knowledge you have
gained from your research, as
substantiated by your use of references. It’s not just your
opinion that counts.
C. Guidelines for Submission:
-The case is due, in a typed hardcopy document form, on 4/17
no later than 6pm in class.
-Case discussion is to be no more than 5 typed, double-spaced
pages
-Reference page(s) required.
-Include Inline citations referencing a specific article,
book, or other form of reference for each key point
you make in your report. Citations must align with a
reference on the reference page. No unused
references allowed on reference page.
– Documents sourced and discussed in the paper should include
contradictory points of view as well as,
