BNSF Railroads
provides services to the vast majority of the United States of
America; stretching from Atlanta, Georgia to Oakland, California,
up to Vancouver, Canada, down to parts of Mexico through El Paso,
Texas. In all BNSF covers 28 states, covering 32,500 route miles.
BNSF is able to cover this immense territory by having 48,000
employees, 138 new or expanded rail-served facilities, nearly 8,000
locomotives and over 40 ports. In order for BNSF to achieve such a
feat they have haulage agreements with other railways and use parts
of the UP/SP trackage rights. In 2014, BNSF invested in nearly $1
billion to expand their facilities and to increase efficiency, they
also invested $1.7 billion into locomotive, freight cars and other
equipment (acquired, renewed, or replaced). BNSF plans to invest a
record $6 billion in 2015, with 25% going towards expansion and
efficiency and 23% towards locomotives, freight cars and other
equipment.
