Hope is the
intrinsic aspiration of attaining ones wants and needs, and the
stringent factor that determines, not who someone is but how their
character is sculpted, and is hence an attribute of all humanbeings
that is essential for the development of traits such as
perseverance and resilliance, whereas the absense of hope can
result in failure, fear, despair and even ones demise. Fear can
hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free, but concurruently, Hope
is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

Red Redding fears hope throughout Darabonts film because of its
proposed capability to destroy him, represented through his beliefs
that there is no place for hope in Shawshank. Moreover,
underlying themes such as institutionalisation corroborate this
speculation, as a secondary character Brooks Hatlen lives in a
state of despair following his release from Shawshank State after
50 years. He has such an outstanding lack of hope, that results in
his dependance on Shawshank to the point where he chooses to end
his life rather than live in the free world. In Unbroken Jolie
characterises and portrays the character of Francis Mac McNamara
as the result of the abandonment of hope. Mac shows signs of
despair and fear throughout his stranding in the Pacific Ocean with
Louis, becoming far more physically emaciated, depressed and weak
consequently dying long before Louis. The writer of the book
Jolies Unbroken is based off, Laura Hillenbrand explicitly states
men are not defined by themselves, but by their captors and the
circumstances in which they are forced to live, conditions that
most men will have lost their minds in. Within the film characers
such as Warden Norton of Shawshank State and Mutsuhiro Watanabe of
the Omori prison camp personify the oppression of hope the
protagonists are forced to
