Love is a topic
that has taken over todays world. From music to movies, everything
is now based on the love and relationships between people. However,
Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, which is arguably the most famous
love story in the world, could also be seen as a warning against
love. The play Romeo and Juliet shows how platonic and romantic
lovecan cause
tragedy.
First of all, platonic love caused tragedy in Romeo and
Juliet. One of the ways platonic love lead to tragedy was through
the love and loyalty between Romeo and his best friend, Mercutio.
After Tybalt killed Mercutio when Romeo refused to fight him, Romeo
wanted to avenge his friend. He challenged Tybalt to a fight and
exclaimed And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now. (3. 1.

In the play,
Romeo and Juliets love for each other is the source of most of the
tragedy. For example, when Juliet is asking for Friar Lawrences
help to avoid marrying Paris, she recites a list of dangerous
things that she would do rather than marry Paris. Juliet continues
on to say Things that to hear them told have made me tremble, and
I will do it without fear or doubt, to live an unstained wife to my
sweet love. (4. 1. 87-90). In other words, Juliet will do anything
to remain a pure wife to Romeo. This is significant because Juliet
was a logical person but her infatuation with Romeo blinded her to
reason. The fact that they married and slept together only
solidified her devotion to him. This is when Juliet starts making
the rash decisions which eventually cause her death. Therefore, the
romantic love between Romeo and Juliet brought about tragedy.
Furthermore, Pariss love for Juliet also resulted in tragedy. When
Paris is at the Capulet tomb to visit Juliet and he hears someone
else coming, he reacts by saying What cursèd foot wanders this way
tonight, to cross my obsequies and true loves rite? (5. 3.
19-20). That is to say, Paris is irritated that someone is coming
to interrupt his time with Juliet. This is important because the
grief he is experiencing because of Juliets death has made Paris
cynical and pessimistic. When Romeo arrives and tries to persuade
Paris to leave him alone,

Additionally, romantic love blinded characters to reason and common
sense which also caused tragedy. Ultimately, Friar Lawrences
advice about loving moderately couldve saved everyone in Romeo and
Juliet a fair amount of pain and
