The novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley depicts characteristics of gothic literature by showing grotesque characters, bizarre situations, and violent situations. Frankenstein is about a man from Geneva named Victor Frankenstein. He is a smart man, who at a young age, becomes very interested in natural philosophy. His parents, Caroline Beaufort and Alphonse Frankensteinloved him more than anything in the world; he was an only child for several years. However, one day Victor’s mother, Caroline, adopted Elizabeth Lavenza. Caroline fell in love with Elizabeth’s looks when she saw her on the streets of Paris; Victor and Elizabeth were set to be married when they were older. In the novel Frankenstein most of the situations are far from normal. When Victor was feeling depressed, Elizabeth believed he had met another woman, and did not want to marry her. However, Victor did want to marry her, he was just weighed down by having to keep the monster a secret. All Victor’s family was dying one by one. First, his mother died before he went off to school of a sickness she caught from Elizabeth. Next, his brother, William, died by the hands of his creation. Also, Justine was executed for the death of William, because the monster put William’s necklace in her pocket. Henry Clerval was also killed by the monster, because Victor did not obey the monster’s wishes. Elizabeth was also killed by the hands of the monster. Feeling so full of sorrow from the loss of Elizabeth, Victor’s father died soon after her death. Another bizarre situation was the De Lacey family being exiled from France. Felix De Lacey, the son of the De Lacey family, tried to help Safie’s father escape from prison. Safie is a beautiful Arabian girl that Felix fell madly in love with, however, once Felix was discovered helping her father escape, the De Lacy family was stripped of their wealth, and exiled from France. They then had to live in a small cottage, where they barely made ends meet. The monster observed the De Lacey family for several months and learned how to speak, read, and write. The monster is an example of a grotesque character, his appearance is hideous, and his behavior is very inhumane. He murders humans without seeing that it is wrong, and his appearance scares everyone he encounters. Being 8 feet tall, and made out of dead flesh, the monster is grotesque in more ways than one. Frankenstein has a plethora of bizarre situations, such situations make the novel scary, romantic, and sometimes filled with intense emotions. Situations like Elizabeth thinking that Victor does not want to marry her, the De Lacey being exiled from France, and Victor’s family dying off so fast are examples of bizarre situations. Violent situations also play a key role in Frankenstein.
