Acceptance, is a feeling desired by many people. Some may find it, some may live their life pursuing it, it is a curse some may say some may find it a gift. A fictional character by the name of Arturo Bandini, in the novel Ask the Dust, was a victim of this curse. He strives for the acceptance in another dominant culture for personal recognition and end up losing what he had at the beginning of his sorrowful journey. On the other hand, Sixto Rodriguez, well known as Sugar man, desired acceptance from his inner self. He made his music to unveil the cruel reality of Detroit, Michigan, and did not care about the popularity, as well as fame. His incentives were not changed with the opinions of the society. Rodriguez made peace with his conscious …show more content…
Question is whose life is worth living as an immigrant.
An immigrant’s life can be very difficult, adjusting to the culture and tradition of an unknown country can be very challenging for an individual. One of the most filth filled incident in the novel, Ask the Dust, was the encounter with Miss Hargrave and Bandini at the hotel, is as follows “... and after the signature I wrote, 'Boulder… I told her my name. She printed it carefully over the signature.... 'All right,' I said. 'It's in Nebraska.' And I wrote it down, scratched out the Colorado and wrote Nebraska over it.” (48) Miss Hargraves, hotel clerk, an Anglo American, insult Bandini in the last quote; having a sense of superiority because of the pigmentation of her skin. The whole point of writing over Bandini’s signature was to remind him that his place in society is far below for him to be proud of himself, by having a fancy about his signature. However, no one has the powerto control an unacceptable behavior of an inhumane civilian. What an individual has power of is the physical and mental aspect of their own self. Bandini denied that self-respect he possessed, by giving up his hometown, Boulder, and accepting what Miss Hargraves was insisting on Boulder being in Nebraska, not Colorado. “...library with the big boys in the shelves, old Dreiser, old Mencken, all the boys down there, and I went to see them, Hya Dreiser, Hya Mencken, Hya, hya: there's a place for me, too, and it begins with B, in the B shelf, Arturo Bandini, make way for Arturo Bandini…” (Ask the Dust, 13), I interpret this quote as in the desire of being recognized as a human being. The recognition, that he fills a meaningful space in the society as a man because with recognition comes power, the power every other Anglo American possessed in the United States from that period. Bandini did not realize that no matter how good of a writer he becomes, his under looked race and superior ideology of Anglo America would not consider him as a respectable writer. Bandini’s hunger for power and insecurities lead him losing the most meaningful thing in his life, Camila. Bandini should have understood that he cannot find love in materialistic thing, but in Camila or Vera. Some could say it was his immaturity, I believe it was pride. However, realizing in the end of the novel, that trying to gain acceptance into the society was a worthless battle that only lead to pain. Bandini lost identity, which he sold to Miss Hargraves, and lead to a domino effect a sorrowful. However, Rodriguez lived a very interesting life, and taught me a very valuable lesson.
