I went to this
show expecting greatness; I returned having seen a theatrical
phenomenon. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time was a
play that, having thrived in the West-End, was brought to
Nottinghams Theatre Royal. An astonishing cast with talented
actors such as Joshua Jenkins, Gina Isaac, Stuart Laing and
Geraldine Alexander allowed Marianne Elliot (Director) to achieve
near-perfection in the art of telling a story through physical
theatre. This allowed her to explore poignant and emotive themes
relating to anxiety, being an outcast and seeing the world
differently; she was able to link this effectively to Christophers
Aspergers Syndrome (a condition lying upon the autistic spectrum).

Bunny Christie
(designer for the play) worked with the director tirelessly to
ensure that the dynamic between the characters was flawless and
poignant.By using the medium of clothing throughout the play,
Christie was able to emphasise characters relationships or
personality. The Headmistress, played by the comically genius Clare
Perkins, wore very bright and flamboyant colours (such as Barbie
pink) to indicate her upbeat and colourful personality. Conversely,
the Reverend at the school (with whom Christopher had numerous
disagreements) wore mainly brown and yellow clothing, to symbolise
their awkward relationship; he told Christopher that hating yellow
and brown is silly. In Figure 8 we can see Christophers
complicated relationship with his parents. Whereas the costume
indicates that he prefers his mother (lack of brown/yellow
clothing), she is standing above him, possibly demonstrating that
she has trouble communicating with Christopher. Conversely, even
though Ed (Christophers Dad) wears brown shoes, he is on
Christophers level indicating Ed understands him
