CULTURAL PROFILE ASSIGNMENT (25%) ­ DUE 30THOFMARCH.This assignment is aimed at deepening awareness of your own social and cultural identities. Youare to write a 3-4 page paper (1 1/2 line -spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, thatdiscusses certain aspects of your ethnic background and/or other aspects of your social identity.Your paper should address at least two aspects of your social identity (e.g. ethnicity and religion,ethnicity and gender, race and nationality, gender and economic class…). You are expected tochoose among the ones discussed in Chapter 4. You may address more than two, but more thanthree or four is too much. Specifically, you should discuss the following issues for each identity:Avowal: What does this identity mean to you? Why is it important?Ascription: How does this identity affect the way other people perceive or treat you?(Have you or your family ever been discriminated against? Have you noticed anyadvantages that your identity gives you in society?)Something about the history of your group in your country (e.g. why did you or yourancestors first come to your native country, or how did your group first become identifiedas it is today?)How would you characterize members of your social identity group? What kinds ofthings do you share (e.g. beliefs, values, norms, traditions…)?In what ways does your identity make you similar to or different from mainstreamculture? How, and from whom, have you learned this?How do the two (or more) identities you chose to examine interact with each other?You might also discuss some of the following:How did you first come to be aware of your identity as a member of this group?
