Santosh Patel called Pi and Ravi unexpectedly and tries to frighten them, to keep them from being naive by going close to a ferocious carnivorous animal. This is important towards the setting because Pi lives in a Zoo and is surrounded by animals that can easily disfigure him. Martel uses hyperboles to exaggerate the fear of Pi by saying that his neck should have snapped and his head should have fell to the floor because of how hard he was nodding.
