Before I Was
Born Did you know that my grandmas family name was originally
Karlsson if you were a man and Karlsdaughter if you were a woman?
When my great, great grandfather moved to America they changed it
to Carlson so it would be more American. This is how they came to
America. Johanna Osterberg my great, great grandma sailed on a Ship
called the Marsden from Linkoping, Sweden to Hull England, then on
to New York City, New York, when she finally ended at Sioux City,
Iowa on May 26th, 1882. From there she found my great, great
grandfather David Karlsson (Carlson). David sailed on a ship called
the Orlando from Gothenburg, Sweden to Hull, England from England
he went to The
United
statesand then on to Sioux city, Iowa on October 6, 1882.

Meals consisted
of about 20 large tubs of beef and bean soup for hundreds of people
to share and each person got a thin slice of bread to go with their
meal. When you had to use the restroom you had to use a bucket that
everyone shared. Beds were very thin small cots crammed in the
hull. Right above the hatch to go on deck were cattle that were
also getting shipped to America. This made it very miserable.
Johanna was only 18 when she left for America, with her friend
Anna. Anna was David Karlssons sister. To get Johanna to America
they listed her has Annas husbands sister, because she was not
yet married. They all travelled together to Sioux City, Iowa where
David meet up with them months later and Johanna and David got
married. Together they had 15 children four girls and eleven boys
(one of them being my great grandpa
