Modernism
changed the way artist expressed themselves in their art work. Many
of this artist were seen as rebels, anarchist, and radicals. The
world they lived in really changed their ideas and how they saw the
world. Before modernism most artist were writing romantic stories.
This stories always had a happy ending or the main character would
always have some heroic act. Modernism introduced the ideas of
focusing on real issues that were going on in the world. To have
the reader actually find a meaning on the story, and not to treat
the reader as incompetent. Using symbols in stories were very
important; interpretation could be made of this symbols. Many of

At first
Design can be seen as a very simplistic poem. I found a dimpled
spider, fat and white, on a white heal-all, holding up a moth(Pg.
740) the vocabulary is not difficult, and Frost did this on
purpose. Making it simple but having a deeper meaning is something
modernism really focuses in. The poem focuses on how everything has
a purpose, and if everything just happens to be coincidence or is
everything created by a higher intelligence What brought the
kindred spider to that height, then steered the white moth thither
in the night? (Pg. 740 ). I believe this quote is also talking
about god. Most modernist artist had a lot to say about religion,
but they would talk about it in a subtle way. What brought the
kindred spider to that height? Is the question we always ask
ourselves why is this happening? Is something bigger than us
controlling our lives or is just chance. The last quote also
connects with this If design govern in a thing so small (Pg.
740). How something so small can have so many intricate design as a

The story being
with dialogue The marvellous thing is that its painless.. Thats
how you know when its starts (Pg.1021). The format of this story
is very modernistic on how its developed by Hemingway. It doesnt
have a start, middle, or end.The reader has to read on and really
pay attention to how Hemingway introduces his characters. Hemingway
makes Harry an unlikeable character by the words he uses against
his wife like you rich bitch (Pg.1025), Your damned money was
my armour (Pg.1025), and saying no to her when she asked if he
loves her (Pg. 1023). I believe Hemingway did this to make it more
realistic Harry is saying all of this to her because he doesnt
believe he will be coming out of this alive He looked over to
where the huge, filthy birds sat, their naked heads sunk in the
hunched feathers (Pg. 1022). Symbolism is a big part of modernism.
The vultures represented that Harry was going to die and he knew
this as well thats why he goes into a verbal rampage on his wife.
Hyenas also had a presentation of death. Hemingway skips around
with Harrys memories from being a kid to what he did the years
before He thought about alone in Constantinople that time, having
quarreled in Paris before he had gone out (Pg. 1029). I believe
