Having extreme, agonizing, punishments was not out of the ordinary during the 17th century. The punishments and crimes were very unsystematic, and often times very foul. There were punishments that were as minor as carting,and there were punishments as severe as the death penalty.Throughout the 17th century there were a variety of punishments for different crimes that were commited.In the 17th century there were punishments for misdemeanors, or crimes that were very minor. Some of those lesser punishments included: The Pillory, Branding, and Carting. The pillory, also known as the stretch neck, was a single board with three holes, connected to a metal rod. During the late 17th century, death penalty crimes increased from fifty to one hundred-sixty. The Bloody Code, also known as the English Penal Code, was the English legal system during the late 17th century. It was known as the Bloody Code because there were so many crimes punishable by the death sentence. The Bloody code was just supposed to be something to threaten people, or to remind people of what would happen if they thought about breaking the law. There were many crimes that were punishable by death. Some of those crimes included: buggery, treason, stealing hawks, and highway robbery. There were distinct ways a person could have died. The victim could have been burned, hung, or even drawn and quartered. Drawn and quartered was when the criminal would be cut into four pieces and beheaded. This would have happened to a man if he were to commit treason. If a woman were to commit treason, she would have been burned at the stake. Lastly, there was hanging. The victim was oftentimes hung alive at Tyburn in London. Big crowds would usually gather to see this happen.
