Exploring the mind of an individual on the autistic spectrum is remarkable. The author, Mark Haddon does exactly that through his book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. His novel is fascinating yet realistic. The book starts off with the narrator, an autistic fifteen year old boy named Christopher Boone. He finds a dead poodle named Wellington, with a pitchfork through its body. He then sets out to investigate the murder of Wellington. His investigation is aided and hampered throughout the novel, with multiple shocking and unexpected things happening to Christopher as the novel continues. Christopher adheres to some of the characteristics such as finding social interactions difficult and engaging in repetitive movements or …show more content…
“...perceptions of and attitudes towards autistic people may be largely based on stereotypes” (Wood 132). Usually, people are quick to judge others. If anyone were to see someone different than them, they would be considered weird. Taking this into account, there are many stereotypes of autistic people. Stereotypes that classify autistic people are to have poor social skills, communication, and a lack in empathy. Moreover, being introverted, withdrawn, and highly intelligent are common stereotypes of ASD. According to Australian and British print media (2011), “‘Autistic people are often portrayed as unstable or dangerous”’ (Wood 132). However, many of these stereotypes are inaccurate. Howlin, Goode, Hutton, & Rutter (2009) give us an example of how the stereotype of every autistic individual having a high intelligence is overstated. “‘...it is very difficult to think of an example of a character in a film or television series who is autistic but who does not have some form of intelligence...in reality less than 30% of those who are autistic actually possess such a skill”’(Wood 132). Speaking of films, a college student was called “Rain Man” because he is autistic. Rain Man is a character with autism, in a movie called “Rain Man”. Kerry, the college student, describes how he doesn’t fit the stereotype of being good at math or having poor verbal communication. “Some think people with autism lack social interaction and …show more content…
For instance, he follows the stereotype of being introverted and withdrawn. Christopher often describes wanting to be alone in the world. Towards the end of the novel, he has one of his favorite dreams, which is where everyone on earth is dead, except him and others like him. “And I can go anywhere in the world and I know that no one is going to talk to me or touch me or ask me a question. But if I don’t want to go anywhere I don’t have to, and I can stay home...”(Haddon 199). This part of the book proves that Christopher is extremely introverted and withdrawn. Additionally, Christopher possess the stereotype of having a high intelligence. In the book he wrote, he talks about how all the other children in his school are stupid and how he wants to prove that he is not. “I am going to prove that I’m not stupid...I’m going to take my A level in maths and I’m going to get an A grade. No one has ever taken an A level at our school before..” (Haddon 44). This quote illustrates that Christopher’s intelligence is higher than any other person to have ever gone to his school. Accordingly, Christopher does fit the stereotype of having a high intelligence. Christopher also adheres to the stereotype of having poor social skills and communication. When Christopher engages in a conversation with anyone, he only replies if the other person says a question or answer that is directly related to
