once said But the Civil war defined us as what we are and it
opened us to being what we became, good and bad things. It was the
crossroads of our being, and it was a hell of a crossroads. In
this famous phrase he states how the civil war shaped the future of
generations ahead, and was the collision of our beliefs, which led
to issuing many policies and the burst of many disagreements, which
were later solved with violence. His statement is valid because it
interprets the situation the people where in, how they felt, and
how the Civil War later affected peoples actions and beliefs.
In the mid 1800s the beliefs over
slaverywere
colliding. The North believed slavery was unconstitutional, and
African Americans were meant to be treated equally as Whites, while
the South believed that White Men were meant to be above African
Americans, and saw abolishing slavery as a threat to economy. This
disagreement caused anger among the states, and began increasing
rapidly which led to sectionalism, which can be represented as the
crossroads in Footes statement. States started rebelling and
started getting the idea of excluding themselves from the Union and
began using principles of self-government functioning with their
own laws without basing their government on the Constitution. In

belief that sectionalism was the main cause of war. This can be
connected to one of the good things the Civil War shaped us into

Statesof America which means that despite the conflict, every
state shall be unified as a nation and not as separate sections.
The Civil War made us realize that acting as a nation can
strengthen, and benefit each and every part of the country, and
that we will be stronger when we fight as a
