In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, Miller presents Proctor’s downfall as a direct result of his affair with Abigail, therefore showing that John Proctor is a tragic hero. The town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1662 is under the threat of witchcraft. Every character is either lying to save their lives or dying for not admitting a lie. One character that justifies his beliefs is John Proctor, a simple townsmen. However, in standing up for his beliefs, John Proctor and many others in Salem were found incriminated of witchcraftby the court. This was a result of Proctor’s bad decisions. Proctor states, “ I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a fraud. I am not that man. My honesty has broke, elizabeth; i am not a good man. Nothing's spoiled by giving them this lie that were not rotten long before” (Miller 136). As John Proctor realizes that he is an honest man, he becomes more rational. Proctor confesses that his testimony was incorrect and he cannot go through with his lies as he is an honest man. Proctor is a person who shows integrity and honesty even in times of life and death. Proctor expresses, “Good then her saintliness is done wit. We will slide together into our pit; you will the court what you know” (Miller 80). When Proctor had the affair with Abigail, he had tried to make a stop to it. However, Abigail could not bear the news of Proctor leaving her and so she had a witch, Tituba, make a spell that would kill Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth. In failing to do this, Abigail had started lying to the court saying the could see the devil, thus the beginnings of the Witch Trials. As Abbotson stated, “Proctor willingly committed the sin of adultery and ruined a young girls future prospects” (17). Furthermore, The witch Trials led to the downfall of John Proctor. As Abigail was accusing many in town of witchcraft, Elizabeth’s Wife was one of them. John, to try and stop this, accepted that he had committed a sin of adultery.
