The Void that Cannot Be Filled
Tardats haunting novel, A Sweet Death, and Sylvia Plaths
semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar, both closely examine
through the lens of the protagonists, both of whom are young women,
deep psychological illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and
dissatisfaction with societal expectation, and the struggle to live
a liberated life, without restraint. In both novels the
protagonists spiral down into their own despair, ruminate about
death, and contemplate suicide. The lack of control both characters
feel over their own lives manifests itself in suicidal ideation,
knowing if they cant control their lives, death is the only
control they can salvage. Both novels deal with feminist themes,
about the beauty and social standards demanded by our patriarchal
society. But where A Sweet Death ends on a dark note in which the
protagonistultimately succeeds in taking her own life, The Bell
Jar suggests an optimistic future for the protagonist.
In a Sweet Death (Tardat, 1988) the main
character(left unnamed) aspires to be more like her mother,

Both of them
show symptoms of major depressive disorders such as preoccupation
or obsession with death, general discontent, mood swings, sleep
issues, rapid weight loss or gain, apathy, sadness, and suicide
ideation. The unnamed protagonist in A Sweet Death in her despair
seeks out food as her only comfort. She binges on sweets constantly
to eventually kill herself with food. Eating disorders often stem
from a lack of control in other areas of life, and it is satisfying
from the complete control or the lack thereof. Esther takes control
of her own life by attempting to end it in any way she can,
drowning herself and overdosing on sleeping pills. Out of this
hopeless despair the characters look for any way out they
possibly
