Throughout all
of Brave New World it is easily noticeable that Bernard Marx does
not necessarily fit in with all of the other Alpha pluses or even
fit in with anyone from this high tech and very strictly classified
world. He is shy and views being intimate as more of a private
matter rather than one that is done constantly(Huxley 64). Bernard
ran into the room where the director was and could feel the anxiety
rising yet he knew this was his time. He bantered back and forth
with the director briefly then ran to the hall door and opened it,
unleashing the directors best kept secrets. John and Linda entered
and turned all eyes to the director in an effort to expose him,
even though Bernard was anxiety ridden as this was happening, he
knew that his time to come out on top was near. Bernard is
continually anxious about all that is going on around him, he also
believes in modesty and did not see a reason for soma. Since
Bernard was experiencing feelings of utter anxiety while he exposed
the director he still never turned to soma, this is a highly
logical choice, as he saw that it had no purpose for doing any
good. While Bernard spoke to the director he thought about how the
director and him differed so greatly. The director was much less
mild mannered, whereas Bernard was calm and more anxiety ridden

Bernard kept
describing the way his palms felt sweaty and clammy. He also
described the way in which his mind kept racing while John and
Linda were reintroduced to the story. Even though Bernard felt
nervous and could feel the anxiety rising from within him, he never
felt himself yearning for soma to relieve his feelings of anxiety,
unlike the other people of the Brave New World. It is important
that he never turned to soma, as it represents that his own morals
held higher to him than the opinions of those around
