In Sonnys
Blues by James Baldwin, the author talks about the past and
present lives of two brothers who lived their lived differently,
Sonny and the narrator who named is never mentioned. The main
character in Sonnys Blues is brothers, Sonny and the narrator
which the narrator try to improve his relationship with his younger
brother who has lived a miserable life. In the short story,
Sonnys Blues the narrator shows sympathy for his younger brother
Sonny not by changing his lifestyle and personality, but instead by
being by his side and supporting his decisions.

Meanwhile, the
narrator lived a good life and became a successful person then his
brother. When Sonny was trying to express himself on how he felt
inside and show his drug abuse, his brother did not want to accept
his brother drug abuse. In Sonny Blues it said Sonny was wild,
but he wasnt crazy. And hed always been a good boy, he hadnt
ever turned hard or evil or disrespectful. Even though the
narrator feels Sonny isnt bad influence, he doesnt show
compassion for his younger brother because he believes his younger
brother wont change his lifestyle. He was expecting more of Sonny
especially that he was away from him. When the narrator asks his
brother what he want to do as he gets older, his brother give him a
surprised answer that make him go completely off. His brother was
interested in music that was played in his neighborhood. In Sonny

brother asks him What kind of musician do you want to be? Then

The narrator
begins to be more caring and protective in the wellbeing of Sonny.
The narrator begins to write to his brother Sonny about how he has
been and how life going ever since he left to go to the military.
Sonny brother is aware that if he doesnt take care of his younger
brother Sonny like he promise his mother before she died, Sonny
life would be totally different. The narrator has a daughter who
was named Grace. Unfortunately, the narrator had a very untouchable
moment with his daughter Grace. When the narrator start to tell
Sonny that there was no way he could have stopped his daughter
death. He started
to question Sonny life. It said I didnt write Sonny or send him
anything for a long time. When I finally did, it was just after my
little girl death, which it me feel like a bastard. Its the
reason why the narrator begin to worry about his younger brother,
he regret not being with his daughter when she pass away, begins to
contact Sonny immediately. Eventually the narrator invites his
brother to come live with him and Sonny agrees to live them until
he finished school. This become a big turning point in the
narrators character of Sonny Blues because he has finally begun
to wonder about the life that Sonny had lived and start to take
good care of Sonny by having him lived with his family. He want
