Although it is nearly impossible to get an entirely accurate count, there exist at least 6,500 languages (Leonard et. al., 59). Something tells me that if language were about something as simple as communication, that number would be smaller. In all actuality, people feel deeply connected to their native languages for another reason. Languageand culture are one and the same, and Gloria Anzaldua illustrates this in her piece “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” using examples of changes and suppressions of her language, to represent changes and suppressions of her culture as a whole. “If you want to be American, speak American (Anzaldua, 53).” A bigoted phrase, yes, but also a very good use of rhetorical foreshadowing. This goes beyond frustration with a lack of communication. The teacher is not upset that she is speaking another language, she is upset that that language is representative of a culture other than her own. How does this apply to our daily lives? Well, you could look again at the interaction between Anzaldua and her teacher in her early life. Anzaldua was physically punished for speaking with an accent; something that created both a temporary and lasting impact. One could assume that she no longer felt comfortable and safe at school, something the School of Very Smart Science People found is key to getting the most of your education. This translates into the adult world as well. People use an accent as a guise to get away with racism. You can turn down a job applicant you feel you cannot communicate clearly with, but you can’t turn down a job applicant because they are a different ethnicity.
