In comparing the biblical prophets Amos and Haggai, the
similarities of their plight to save the people of God is
overwhelming. The
prophetAmos
described the consequences that would come to people who had turned
their backs on God. Amos warnings were not meant only for his day,
but also for this day. Amos, meaning burden-bearer, inhabited the
rugged region of Tekoa, located in the territory of Judah about 12
miles south of
Jerusalem. He
was a shepherd and tended to sycamore fig trees (Amos 7:14-15).

The book of
Haggai was written in 520 B.C, with the fall of Babylon
approximately 19 years earlier in 539 B.C. Under the rule of the
Persian King Cyrus, the Jews were encouraged to return to their
country of origin and to rebuild the Jerusalem temple so that their
God would once again have a house to live in (Ezra 1:1-4). However,
after many years in Babylonian captivity the Jews had built homes,
started successful businesses, married and raised families. As
might be expected, many were reluctant to leave their safe way of

Amos is one of
the prophets who documented what is ahead for the people and
nations of the world. The nations of modern Israel (United States)
is facing unprecedented national tragedies. Our nation is riddled
with war, school shootings, poverty, racial divide, crime, and a
plethora of other troubles. Amos provides a brief outline of these
events (Amos 4:6-12 and 5:1-3). Even in the midst of our nations
tribulations, Yet God pleads: Seek good and not evil, that you may
live; so the LORD God of hosts will be with you. Hate evil, love
good; establish justice in the gate. It may be that the LORD God of
hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph (Amos 5:14-15).
Unfortunately, Gods pleading fell on deaf ears then and continues
to be ignored by some
