For this research assignment we are going to look at the Green Revolution, between the 1940s and 1970 that helped to boost worldwide agricultural production. There are a number of issues and topics to study here, many of which tie directly into the ideas and people, and some which are significant in today’s world (like GMOs, industrialized agriculture, the use of pesticides, drought and famine, and the strain on resources such as water). Don’t forget to consider the Second Green Revolution and its proponents, opponents, and approaches.
Step 1. Research into the Green Revolutions itself and come up with facts and figures. Examine both sides of the issue so that you are well-informed on the pros and cons. Take notes or write up your findings in a 3 to 5 page paper and send it to me.
Step 2. Pick a side in the argument for a proposed international conference to address global population, food, pollution, climate change, resources, and the future of humanity. I have listed some general categories but feel free to come up with your own (and of course there are shades of support, such as a Moderate Malthusian or a Luke-Warm Technocrat).
Malthusians – we are going to hit a limit and may have already done so
Technocrats – science, technology and human innovation will carry the day
Agrarians – locally grown natural foods are best for human/planetary health
Moderates – we can tame technology and control population safely
Resources – we have to limit our use and abuse of the planet
