Beowulf has
shown many characteristics of a hero. Where as Grendel has shown
characteristics of being an outcast. The role of the hero in
Beowulf was portrayed by Beowulf himself. Beowulf was the leader
and took on three quests for his people. Most heroes would need
some form of preparation before they complete quests, but
Beowulfdid not
need any preparation. Beowulf had callings while he was the leader
of the Geats. These callings were the three quests that Beowulf
needed to complete for the greater good of Hrothgars people.
Defeating Grendel, defeating Grendels mother, and attempting to
slay the dragon that had burned the houses and land of the Geats
were callings Beowulf had to face. At first the Geats thought that
Grendel could not be defeated until Beowulf came along. Grendel was
a revenge seeking descendant of Cain. Grendel had been banished
from the social groups because of his appearance and relation to
Cain. Grendel would be considered the outcast in Beowulf because
Grendel would sit outside of Herot, listen, and watch. He would
listen to the people's laughter and constant conversation. Grendel
would even sit outside and watch the people enjoy their time

Hrothgar's
people understood that Beowulf was a hero and would soon be a great
leader. They saw that Beowulf was a hero because he defeated the
main outcast which was Grendel, while defeating his mother as well,
then Beowulf showed his bravery for the people by attempting to
slay the dragon. Beowulf only had his people in mind when he went
on these three quests. He never thought about being defeated
himself, but only thought about defeating the outcasts for the
greater good of the
