When one sits down and takes a look at the Constitution of the United States, it is evident that any reference of political parties is absent from its pages. However in modern American politics, political parties essentially define the entire political ideology spectrum in the United States. The two major parties that encompass modern politicsare the Democrats, and the Republicans. The ideologies of these two entities however are at opposite ends of the ideological spectrum, and contain almost no overlap. With no similarity in ideas of how a government should be run and what policies are important, both sides of the political system aspire to be in charge because they believe that their way is better than any other. According to Michael Coblenz (2016) “A recent Pew Research survey found that 36 percent of Republicans thought that liberal policies are ‘a threat to the nation’s well-being.’ 27 percent of Democrats feel the same way about conservatives. They don’t just think they have better ideas or their opponents are misguided and honestly believe that the other side is more interested in partisan gain than the well-being of the nation”. With this constant ideology inside of the lawmaking sector of the United States, one can begin to see the downside of having only two views on any law making political decisions made within government. Through many different systems, and ways representatives of the American people have shown undoubtedly that the ideology of their political partymatters more than the wellbeing of the nation. The first President of the United States, George Washington had much to say on the behalf of political parties. George Washington stated in his farewell address that, “the alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension…is itself a frightful despotism”. Washington’s prediction all those years ago has steadfastly held its ground, and has showed exactly why the American people were warned about political parties in the first place. With everything that is currently going on in politics, it is apparent that we as a nation need to start listening to one of our greatest founding fathers, and do away with political factions that are impeding proper representation of the American
