One would think that how can you save a person from being driven crazy. Gilman suffered so much from a near mental breakdown, in the mid 1800s. She was given a very similar treatment like the one in “The Yellow Wallpaper”. Although everyone would admit that he/she should know better by now, one cannot help thinking that John shows that he is defeated, when the narrator becomes the womanbehind the wallpaper, who cna creep down the road, away form the house. Critics argue that Gilman’s was ahead of her time for her colleagues to not understand her, story of a woman having mental breakdown. Korb is surely right about the narrator, who has no physical or spiritual escape from her husband, because as he/she may not be aware, recent studies have shown that, in “The Yellow Wallpaper” the text she creates as she described her relationship with the wallpaper. Perhaps because of the wallpaper she realizes two patterns; the bars in front of the woman in the back. She tried to escape but becomes the wallpaper woman. Wagner-Martian emphasizes that Gilmans’ main character may have found a more compatible world in her fantasy. She worried about role as a wifeand mother. As the narrative end, much of her life is in her own control as it has ever been, she is worried about planning her escape to get out of this twisted nightmare. She is never to be the self-reliant and capable wife of John’s dreams. Wagner-Martin point out is that even Gilman’s autobiography makes clear her years of her poverty, debts, her loneliness and her arduous life. That no wonder “The Yellow Wallpaper” portrays a woman so accurately. This is not why Gilman’s readers are attracted to her story: Its the story of the young married woman as mother. Wagner-Martin theory of dealing with woman who is trapped in her own sea of nightmares is extremely useful because it sheds insight on the difficult problems of us seeing woman go through rough times to eventually not seeing young married woman as mother. A discussing of Wagner-Martin is in fact
