One would think
that how can you save a person from being driven crazy. Gilman
suffered so much from a near mental breakdown, in the mid 1800s.
She was given a very similar treatment like the one in The Yellow
Wallpaper. Although everyone would admit that he/she should know
better by now, one cannot help thinking that John shows that he is
defeated, when the narrator becomes the
wallpaper, who cna creep down the road, away form the house.
Critics argue that Gilmans was ahead of her time for her
colleagues to not understand her, story of a woman having mental
breakdown. They were still accustomed to the traditional
literature that even woman could read it accurately. They chose not

Korb is surely right about the narrator, who has no physical or spiritual escape from her husband, because as he/she may not be aware, recent studies have shown that, in The Yellow Wallpaper the text she creates as she described her relationship with the wallpaper. Perhaps because of the wallpaper she realizes two patterns; the bars in front of the woman in the back. She tried to escape but becomes the wallpaper woman. She escape those places leading her husband, the forces that kept her trapped there becomes a madwoman who refuses to write anymore, only to freed herself from the text that chronieles her mental breakdown. Although Korb may have seem concern to only a small group of woman to be accepted for what they are: creative,independent, thinking creatures, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about Gilmans that having money, a private room are not all necessary in a leisure time. While one likely believes that women should just cook, clean, and take care of their children they also have to think on, one should also believe how much a woman has to manage recovery by defying the advice of one of the most respected of American physicians. Wagner-Martian emphasizes that Gilmans main character may have found a more compatible world in her fantasy. She worried about role as a wifeand mother. As the narrative end, much of her life is in her own control as it has ever been, she is worried about planning her escape to get out of this twisted nightmare. She is never to be the self-reliant and capable wife of Johns dreams. Wagner-Martin point out is that even Gilmans autobiography makes clear her years of her poverty, debts, her loneliness and her arduous life. That no wonder The Yellow Wallpaper portrays a woman so accurately. This is not why Gilmans readers are attracted to her story: Its the story of the young married woman as mother.
