Easy Forum Discussion Activity (participation required) Make up a research question that you would be interested in exploring using the methods described in Chapter 6. Describe how you would use quantitative methods to explore your question. Then make up another question and describe how you would use qualitative methods to explore your question. Be creative and write about research topics you really care about. Your initial postings about this will be short – then just discuss the ideas among yourselves. You do not need to justify the need for your study or discuss background research (so citations should not be necessary unless you make other claims requiring evidence). Example posting (your posting for each research question can be even shorter than this if you can say what you need to with fewer words): Are children who view anime films aware that the characters are not real? I think it would be a good idea to show some children a Pokémon film and then interview them individually (this would be using a qualitative method). I would use a structured interview designed to learn about the fantasy and reality attributions the children give to the characters. For example, I might ask, “Do you think a real person would act the way that Pikachu does in the film?†I would ask what the differences might be between how the characters act and how people might act in real situations. I would devise a coding strategy to analyze the responses and have several coders work on the interviews. I would try to achieve reliable coding between coders by refining the codebook as we go along so it is clear to everyone how to code the responses. Hopefully, by using the qualitative method we could learn something more about the fantasy and reality judgments the children make than we would with a quantitative study (because we can ask open-ended questions and let the children answer in more depth than a typical questionnaire might allow).
